A blockchain is a general term for a decentralized ledger in which transactions are recorded in a secure, transparent, and immutable manner, whereas Bitcoin is a specific blockchain developed by the mysterious cryptographer Satoshi Nakamoto.
Put simply, Bitcoin is the name of an individual blockchain.
What is a Blockchain?
A blockchain is a decentralized ledger where individual transactions are stored in a transparent, immutable, and anonymous manner.
Each blockchain is composed of a series of transactions. These individual transactions, when clubbed together, are called a block, and a series of such blocks is called a blockchain.
There are several types of blockchains, such as public chains, private chains, hybrid chains, and sidechains. Each category represents specific kinds of blockchains.
What is Bitcoin?
Bitcoin is a specific blockchain developed by a mysterious cryptographer, Satoshi Nakamoto, to create a system of finance where each currency can be identified as a unique piece of code, and each transaction is verified by the consensus of members taking part in the network.
It was the first successful blockchain to create a system where code cannot be simply copied to replicate cryptocurrencies. Previously, any cryptocurrency could be indefinitely copied to create an infinite supply, thereby devaluing it to zero.
